Baking Soda, Vinegar and Lemon Juice for the Laundry

Doing family loads of  laundry account for a high percentage of our household energy usage and are responsible for  a large amount of the chemicals that we bring into our home on a regular basis.  Products we use in our washer and dryer are loaded with petroleum based chemicals, perfumes and brighteners.  By going back to basics that our grandmother used, we can eliminate these chemi cals and still get clean laundry for our family and home.  Try a quarter cup of baking soda in the wash cycle to soften clothes and absorb odors.  A quarter cup of vinegar in the rinse cycle with help rinse out the soap residue from you clothes and bedding as well as the inside of your washing machine.

No need for those dryer sheets loaded with chemicals and coating the lint screen with a film so your dryer needs to work harder.  I use dryer lavender flowers in a tightly closed muslin bag for my dryer with terrific results.  Or better yet dry what you can on a line outside now that the weather is mild.  Nothing beats the smell of fresh sheets that have been out side on the line in the sunshine.
