With the summer fast approaching and farmers’ markets and stands opening throughout the state there is no better time of the year to implement some greener living eating habits into your lifestyle. Here are some simple suggestions to get you started:
1.) Seek out local produce. Know your farmer. Purchasing local produce in your community is good for you, your family, the community and the planet. Minimal transportation, fewer greenhouse emissions, less preservatives and mostly fewer pesticides as well. Maximum flavor and nutrition.
2.) Eat your veggies…and fruits. A vegetarian diet is easier on the planet and on your body, as long as you get all the nutrients that you need. Meat, dairy and grain production take more energy then they return and consume large tracts of land. Try to go for a couple of days a week without meat.
3.) Buy meat and dairy products from local small farmers. If you do eat meat and dairy, try to buy from small local farmers using grass fed, cage free, hormone free farming techniques. See the resource guide for a list of Connecticut farms.
4.) Eliminate take-out. Cut back on your fast food consumption. The planet and your body both will thank you.
5.) Remember to compost what you don’t eat. Do not let your leftovers end up in the landfill. Most foods can be composted and returned to the earth with a minimal amount of effort.
6.) Become food informed. Know what you are eating. We do not have to settle for livestock filled with antibiotics, vegetables coated with pesticides , fish stocks on the verge of collapse and genetically modified crops. There are greener choices. Speak with your grocer and find out where your food comes from. Ask questions about your food.
There is good healthy food available. Ask questions, become informed and make the best choices for your family and the planet.
